1966-1982 Fiat 124 Sport Spider

The Fiat 124 Spider or Sport Spider had an unusually complicated history in terms of pinning down basics like the name, manufacturer, or even years of production. The body was designed by Tom Tjaarda of Pininfarina, and introduced as a Fiat model in 1966. It was for many years the most identifiable car built by Fiat in the United States, where it competed with cars like the MGB. Power came by way of a 1.4 liter inline-4 producing 89 hp. While that seems a little anemic by modern standards, it was fine by the standards of the day, especially given the car's low mass. The Spider's curb weight hovered at a mere 2100 lbs or so for its debut, and remained svelte throughout the many years that followed. Incidentally, the Fiat engine was originally designed by former Ferrari chief engineer Aurelio Lampredi.

Production of the Fiat 124 Spider continued through 1978, whereupon it was renamed the 2000 Spider, after displacement had been bumped to 2 liters, and output had been bumped up to 101 or 104 hp, or dropped to 82 hp, depending upon the engine choice. If that drop even with the extra displacement seems a little counterintuitive, remember that the 1970s hit the automobile industry hard with emissions controls, and the industry did not really rebound in terms of sheer horsepower until the 1980s and 1990s. In any case, the car was sold for an additional 4 years, ending its production as a Fiat model in 1982. Then Pininfarina took up the mantle, and sold basically the identical cars as the Pininfarina Spider Azzura, until production finally ceased altogether in 1985.

Almost 200,000 Spiders under its various names were built.
