Alfa Romeo was the preeminent Italian racing and sporting marque of the prewar era. By the 1950s, however, the company focused more on making affordable sports coupes and convertibles than on racing, and it became overshadowed by companies like Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini that created very strong international brands with cars that became status symbols. Although Alfa did occasionally make a more aggressive performance car like the Montreal, the company avoided horsepower and performance wars, and stayed with its core market.

The limited edition 8C was Alfa Romeo's big game changer. Priced at around $230,000, the 444 hp 8C Competizione served to both increase the brand's name appeal and most importantly lay the foundation for a new design language with one of the most beautiful cars of its era. That design language was carried over to the far more affordable and smaller 4C, the car that spearheaded Alfa's re-entry in the American market.

This car was auctioned off by Mecum Auctions in Monterey, California on August 18-20, 2016.

Italian automakers have been combining passion and performance like no one else for a century, and when Alfa Romeo first showed the revived 8C concept at the Frankfurt motor show in 2003, it proved those qualities were still alive and thriving at that country’s oldest sporting marque. Smitten by the 8C’s unmistakable heritage, potential buyers patiently waited while Alfa continued development until finally releasing the 8C Competizione in 2008. Named after the Vittorio Jano-designed 1930s racing and sports cars that conquered the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio and other classic races, the 8C proved to be everything it was promised to be. Its all-aluminum wet-sump 4.7L V-8 engine—an invigorated version of the Ferrari F430/Maserati Gran Turismo power unit—features chain-driven twin overhead cams per cylinder bank, four valves per cylinder and electronic sequential port fuel injection to generate 444 HP at 7,000 RPM and 354 lb-ft of torque at just 4,750 RPM, translating into 60 MPH at 4.2 seconds and a tested top speed well above the factory-claimed 180 MPH. Built on the Maserati’s rigid platform, the 8C Competizione weighs in at just 3,500 pounds and is tightly parceled around a 104.5-inch wheelbase. Its superb handling is a result of the Maserati’s sophisticated all-independent double A-arm suspension, within which are packaged the 8C’s powerplant and rear-mounted paddle-shift ZF automated 6-speed gearbox and differential. Fitted with specially designed Pirelli tires, the 8C’s 20-inch Marchio Sportivo alloy wheels recall those of the classic late-‘60s P33 Stradale, whose presence is also felt in the car’s taut curves and in such thoughtful details as the beautifully packaged Bi-Xenon headlights, sectioned front grille and single round LED tail lights in the upswept tail. This one-owner 2008 8C Competizione has been enjoyed only 505 miles since new. Announced by a special console-mounted Limited Edition badge as one of just 500 built, its standard features include carbon-fiber body panels and interior trim, ABS and stability controls, cruise control, dual-zone climate control and gorgeous micro-perforated leather sports seats. Add this example’s optional Full Carbon kit, Bose Premium GT sound system, aluminum-color brake calipers, interior mats, lusty 8C Red Metallic paint, status battery, leather headliner and car cover, and you have all the makings of a distinctly modern yet genuinely classic Alfa road car.
