When Fiat began its takeover of Chrysler in 2011, their plans with the company were in some ways more ambitious than the prior owner Daimler. Among other plans, Fiat sought to leverage Chrysler as a means of getting back into the North American market in a big way. The cars of Fiat themselves have frankly not sold as well as planned over here, and if there were early hopes of making the Fiat 500 the next Mini, they seem to be dashed at the moment. Undeterred, the company is pushing forward with this lovely new Alfa Romeo that looks to be aimed squarely at the BMW 5 Series. Will it succeed? We don't know yet, but Alfa Romeo probably has a much better shot at success. For going on 70 years, Italian cars in North America have overall always seemed like a much better value proposition on the mid and high-end than than they did on the low-end, and Alfa Romeo itself has had a more solid name brand and stronger following in the United States.

What Alfa Romeo brings to the table with the Quadrifoglio is honestly impressive. A twin turbo V6 is of Ferrari lineage, and with 505 hp in an all-aluminum 2.9 liter engine, it has the Prancing Horse's characteristic high output in a small package.

Optimal combustion is enhanced with a MultiAir2 system, which Fiat and Alfa Romeo pioneered for use in passenger cars, that precisely controls the opening and closing of intake valves through an electro-hydraulic fully variable valve lift.

For improved efficiency, the engine, half the engine cylinders can be deactivated for everyday driving, and a start/stop system shuts down the engine when the car is at a full stop.

The Quadrifoglio is loaded with featues like an active aerodynamic carbon fiber front air splitter that automatically adjusts for optimal efficiency and stability at any speed, and provide up to 220 lbs of downforce. It also features numerous carbon fiber parts, including the roof, hood, drive shaft, and rear spoiler. The front and rear frames are aluminum, as are the doors, fenders, and front shock towers. Carbon ceramic brakes also contribute to the Alfa's low weight.
