2017 BMW Concept 8 Series

From 1989 through 1999, BMW offered a luxury Grand Tourer 8 Series that eventually replaced the original 6 Series, though at a much higher price, and with the option of V8 or V12 power. History is set to repeat itself when next year the 8 Series makes its return as the current 6 series nears the end of its life. This concept gives us a look at what is close to the final version of the production 8 Series 2-door coupe. A cabriolet and 4-door Gran Coupe will also debut next year, matching the current 6 Series lineup.

While the 6 Series is a sporty car, the 8 Series definitely goes a step further in its streamlining and shapely countours. The downward sloping hood closes over very narrow, squinting headlights, massive air intakes, and an aggressive iteration of the BWM kidney grille. From the side, a pronounced side air vent followed by a contoured cove running into the pronounced rear haunch gives it a purposeful stance, which is aided by the large 21" light-alloy wheels wheels.

The interior is in line with BMW style, but with an ambiance befitting BMW's flagship grand tourer. The driver nestles into Merino Leather seats in Fjord White, and finds himself surrounded by a high console, carbon accents, polished aluminum, and more leather. The iDrive Controller is made from Swarovski crystal the color of smoky quartz.

The production 8 Series is expected to be powered by turbocharged variants of the 3 liter inline-6 and 4.4 liter V8.
