Nearly lost in the splendor and glory that is today's Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the 599 GTB Fiorano is the model that set the stage for the current Ferrari grand tourer. Named after Ferrari’s iconic private test track, the 599 was Ferrari’s front-engined V12 flagship for 6 years, from 2007 to 2012. It was publicly unveiled in February 2006 at the Geneva Auto Show. The design, with its extraordinary long, liquid shape, was penned by Frank Stephenson, Ferrari's chief of design at the time, along with primary design partner Pininfarina. Thanks to its 5,999 cc V-12 engine - derived from the Enzo supercar - the 599 GTB Fiorano offered staggering performance: 612hp, 211 mph top speed, and 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds. It was another example of Ferrari’s dominance in the category of front-engined grand touring cars as they evolved from the 275 GTB to the 365 GTB/4 Daytona and on to the groundbreaking 550 and 575 Maranello models, as always blending all the best of the 60s and 70s grand tourers with the latest technological and mechanical advances of the latter decades. Specifically replacing the 575 Maranello, the 599 incorporated the latest in exotic automotive technology, including an evolutionary improved version of the F1 transaxle, an extruded aluminum chassis (making it 100kg lighter than the Maranello), active aerodynamics (giving 160kg of downforce at 300kph), a magnetorheological shock system and predictive traction control for state-of-the-art road holding. This was, without question, every inch the luxurious, all-day-comfortable two-seat Ferrari. The cockpit was not only spacious, thanks to the long wheelbase, but beautifully crafted from fine leather, aluminum and carbon fiber. The two contoured seats were power operated, as were the windows, mirrors, door locks, and tilt/telescope steering wheel. Dual-zone automatic climate control was included, as were heated mirrors and keyless entry. It was not just a worthy replacement for the 550/575 Maranello, not just a marker for the future for Ferrari road grand touring cars, but the most powerful, sophisticated front-engined V-12 GT in Ferrari's proud history.
The 599 GTB Fiorano came in at just under $280,000 base price, but selecting from a delectable array of options could swell the price as high as $320,000. Evo Magazine named the 599 GTB as their Car of the Year for 2006; that same year, Top Gear Magazine named it the Supercar of the Year.
Two more extreme 599 models, the track-only 599XX and the barely-road legal 599 GTO, capped off the 599 GTB Fiorano's extremely successful run.
This 2009 model, called the 599-VX, has been modified by Vorsteiner, of Southern California. The mods include upgraded 635 HP V-12 engine with a Vorsteiner upgraded paddle-shifter F1 transmission kit, disc brakes with aluminum calipers and Carboceramic brake system, Vorsteiner custom exhaust, BBI specially tuned suspension, and Pirelli P-Zero tires wrapped around Forgiato 22” wheels. The upgraded body kit features a carbon fiber front bumper with chin spoiler, carbon fiber rear bumper with integrated diffuser, carbon fiber vented hood and an aero carbon fiber deck lid spoiler. The outside dazzles with pearl white exterior paint including custom two-tone striping striping and red highlights, with a full red leather interior featuring Daytona seats. The customization gives the car a nice 599 GTO look while elevating the performance above the stock 599.
This car was sold by Mecum Auctions at their Kissimmee Auction in 2016.
